This article explains how to automatically add custom label references, such as Product Title, UPC, or Order Number, to your shipping labels. We also outline which label references are available for each carrier.
For information on connecting to your various shipping accounts or setting up the SolidShip shipping tool, see our Related Articles.
NOTE: Some shipping carriers place limitations on the number of characters that can be printed as a custom label reference. While we print the maximum number of characters allowed, long references can potentially get truncated.

Adding Custom References to UPS Labels
UPS labels accommodate two custom label references. By default, SolidShip automatically prints the Solid Commerce Package ID in the Shipment Reference field when it prints UPS labels.
We send the references to UPS for all labels. However, references may not appear on the labels for all services. For example, references do not appear on Mail Innovations labels.
UPS Label Section |
Default Corresponding Solid Commerce Information |
Shipment Reference |
Package ID |
Order Number | (blank by default) |
You can use Shipping Rules to override the Shipment Reference or use the Order Number reference. For instructions on creating Shipping Rules, see Creating Shipping Rules to Automate Your Shipping.
1) Navigate to the Admin menu -> Manage Shipping Rules.
2) In your Shipping Rule, ensure you have selected a UPS Ship method from the right side of the rule.
3) In the Advanced Options drop-down menu, select Custom Label References. Click Add New Option.
4) In the drop-down menus below Order Number and Shipment Reference, select the Solid Commerce field that you would like to print on your UPS labels.
EXAMPLE: To print the order number from the marketplace in the Order Number field on your UPS labels, select Market Order Number from the Order Number drop-down menu.
5) If the drop-down list of references doesn't include the field you want to add to your labels, you can reference any of the fields available on a packing slip.
- Select Custom from the drop-down.
- Paste one of the packing slip tags in the empty field that appears.
- For a list of packing slip fields, see Available Fields for Packing Slips, Invoices.

SolidShip will automatically print the following label references on your FedEx shipping labels by default.
We send the references to FedEx for all labels, including SmartPost. However, references may not appear on the labels for all services.
FedEx Label Section |
Default Corresponding Solid Commerce Information |
Customer Reference | Package ID |
Invoice Number | Order ID |
PO Number | (blank by default) |
If you like these references, no further setup is required.
If you would like to use different references, you can use Shipping Rules to override the defaults. For instructions on creating Shipping Rules, see Creating Shipping Rules to Automate Your Shipping.
